We got the chance to have a chat with Stubhy Pandav from the Super Happy Fun Club about the young band and their first album release.
You have been a part of several other projects in Chicago, what sets SHFC apart from other bands that you’ve been in?
This project is different because none of us saw it coming, so every minor victory feels great! After my last project ended, I just wanted to do a solo thing and have a revolving door of musicians play with me at small venues where I could play whatever I wanted without any pressure and without having to depend on unreliable band mates. Brad Chagdes heard “Invincible” and asked me to jump on board, then Pat [Gilroy], then Chris [Mason]. By this January, we had a full line up and we had changed our name since it really couldn’t be considered a solo project. So, back to the original question, what sets it apart, this was all an amazing accident that 6 good friends are still reveling in.
Talk about your bandmates: were they handpicked for SHFC or did the pieces just seem to fall into place?
I didn’t mean for this to turn into a real band. I was just having fun, but I can’t think of a better group of guys that know how to balance fun and professionalism. I love having a strong band but, even more so, I love having a group of friends that has a great time hanging around each other.
So where did the name Super Happy Fun Club come from?
Well, it was getting to be more and more ridiculous calling this a solo project considering everyone was contributing, so we gave ourselves a deadline. We went to Subterranean to see our friends play, over a round of shots we decided that we needed to pick the name. Despite our reservations we jumped in the shark tank. We all love the name now. There is so much you can do with it!
You’ve already released some songs, but for the people that haven’t heard them what can we expect from Go Fun Yourself?
Debauchery. Passion. Urgency. Fun.
Your song ‘Generation’ seems to be pretty personal, what is it about?
Actually, this was one of the songs that wasn’t personal. I tapped into the lives of a couple of my friends that dealt with alcoholic fathers and made the song first person. The first line “I can see my tendencies I swear to god they scare me“ is about me but I think those are pretty universal feelings.
What do you like to see from fans when you look out at a crowd?
People having a Super Happy Good (Drunk) Time.
What’s been your favorite experience with the band so far?
I really can’t pinpoint one favorite experience. I really just love going out with the guys, hanging out at Pat and Phil’s place. The Metro show was amazing; being a part of Matthew [Leone of Madina Lake]’s comeback show was surreal. Holding the record in my hand last Thursday was pretty awesome. So everything! I love it all!
What does the future hold for SHFC? Any touring plans? Where do you hope to be in a year from now?
I promised myself not to think about that too much with this band. It’s what starts ruining everything. I just am busy enjoying now and basking in the fact that I am still getting to do this!
